The Brent Geese are back. I was on holidays for the first two weeks of October and I think I missed their arrival.
Yesterday I went for a walk along the sea-front from Sutton Cross to Bull Island and they were out in force, minding their own business, heads down, feeding. They seemed quite happy with their lot!
I’ve loads of photographs of Brent Geese taken on grey winter days with dark skies and dark seas. The Brent Goose is black, grey and white so unfortunately they don’t stand out very well.
But on a very cold, but very sunny day last January, I took this photograph at the Baldoyle seafront. The light on that day was just fantastic.
A few facts about Brent Geese:
- They are usually in Ireland between October and April
- They travel here from Canada
- They really like Dublin Bay (and lots of other Irish coastal spots)!
I’m not a bird watcher, but when I’m out walking I do like to take in my surroundings and if possible discover new things. Along with the Brent Geese you’re likely to see Oystercatchers, Dunlins, Redshanks, Bar-tailed Godwits and Shelducks. There are plenty of gulls, and if you’re lucky you’ll see a Little Egret
In writing this post I discovered what I thought was a small white heron was in fact called a Little Egret!
If you don’t know how to recognise these birds then have a look at the Birdwatch Ireland website and their list of Irish birds. Most of the birds I’ve mentioned are waders and can be easily seen feeding in shallow waters by the coast. No binoculars needed!
