Breakfast: Bagels and Peanut Butter

I believe in breakfast! I think it makes a difference to my ability to get the most out of a day. I try to avoid cereal from the major brand manufacturers and experiment a little. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t sit in a lab each day concocting new flavours that will put a spring in my step. I just like to vary my first meal of the day and take my time over it. It’s what works for me as the ideal way to greet the world in the morning.

My current favourite breakfast is a toasted bagel smothered in smooth peanut butter and a good mug of tea. Is it healthy? I’m not sure, but I believe bagels are considered to be less fattening than other breads and the peanut butter (which according to the jar contains peanuts!) is a protein source. I’m not going to go down a food nutrition path here; the main reasons I like this breakfast are it tastes good and it keeps me from feeling hungry again until lunch time. I wish I could take credit for the combination but it was my wife’s idea. In fact my favourite “winter” breakfast was her idea also, porridge with blueberries – fantastic!

I’d rather get up early or work late, than rush breakfast. That’s just me, how I like to work and how I like my day to begin. On occasion, I do leave the house without eating, but that usually results in low energy and a craving for chocolate that I find hard to ignore.

Looking out the window I can see the day is starting dry, overcast and breezy. Perfect for a reasonably long walk and a chance to put the toasted bagel (did I mention it was only a half bagel?) and peanut butter to an energy test. My plan is to go for a walk around Howth Head (approximately 15 km from Dublin city), which should take between 2hrs and 3hrs, depending on the route I take. The breakfast passes the test if I have no interest in buying food at the Howth Market which is on every Sunday! Not a very scientific test I agree, but it is the sort of test that suits my mood this morning.

In my opinion, it’s a great small meal to start your day with. Try eating your breakfast within an hour after you awake. The bagel is a source of fiber and the peanut butter is protein. You can even add a little honey for sweetness. (choc cravebender) We need these as fuels to keep us from overeating through out our day to day. Remember to drink plenty of water for your system and to keep your hair and skin hydrated. I like to squeeze alittle real lemon juice into my H2O, helps to break down toxins in the body.

    Healthy wishes,

    Greetings,

It’s good to hear you enjoy a warm bagel smothered with some luscious peanut butter- that happens to be one of my favorites as well; you should also try almond butter, rather splendid i must say.I do hope your little “test” went well; personally speaking, bagels smothered with some sort of nut butter, washed down with a good mug of plain tea (i love green tea with a squeeze of lemon and a quick dash of honey) or alternately, a brilliant, warm, freshly brewed java, are indeed great source of healthy carbs, fiber, protein and energy. A banana or a handful of berries along with the bagel is also great. I’d call that a blissful breakfast.

    Cheers

Some great peanut butter alternatives, thank you. Yes the test went well; the half bagel with peanut butter stood up to the challenge and passed!
