The Everyday Tourist

In February 2005 I bought my first digital camera. Soon after buying it I tried it out on a walk in the Slieve Bloom mountains. There, I pushed the patience of my friends to the limit as I attempted to take prize winning photographs while coming to terms with the camera’s controls. I thought everything I saw would make a great photograph.

It was the start of something I wasn’t expecting. Regular use of a camera encouraged me to look at things differently. I started to see photograph possibilities everywhere.

I think going on a holiday has a similar effect. Finding myself in unfamiliar territory I tend to look around more, take in my surroundings, observe and relax. Normal day to day activities are forgotten, and it’s possible to become immersed in the act of having a holiday. Often I find that what is considered mundane for locals can be source of wonder for holiday-makers. Do you ever ask why tourists from exciting and exotic places come to your country and think it’s wonderful?

I want to apply this type of attitude to normal life. I want to find and recognise good and cheerful things in the daily act of living.

The purpose of this blog is to help me achieve this, much like the way the camera helped to open my eyes to photographic possibilities. My goal is to stop taking everyday activities and objects for granted. The blog will be my camera, and I’ll use it to capture aspects of normal day-to-day activity that I find joyous, and encourage good cheer. I’ll use my real camera to take a photo or two also.

That’s it, that’s what the blog is about. If you have any thoughts about what I’m going to do please comment and let me know.
